About the Author
Rainer Martens, PhD, has coached at the youth, high school, and collegiate levels and has studied sport as a research scientist. The founder and president of Human Kinetics, he also started the American Sport Education Program, the largest coaching education program in the United States. An internationally recognized sport psychologist, Martens is the author of more than 80 scholarly articles and 17 books. He has also been a featured speaker at more than 100 conferences around the world and has conducted more than 150 workshops and clinics for coaches and athletes at all levels. After receiving his PhD in physical education from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in 1968, Martens was a member of its faculty for 16 years. A past president of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education, he has been recognized for his contribution to sport by the National Recreation and Park Association and by his induction into the National Association for Sport and Physical Education Hall of Fame. He has received Distinguished Alumni awards from Hutchinson High School, Emporia State University in Kansas (where he earned a bachelor's degree), the University of Montana (where he earned a master's degree), and the University of Illinois. Martens continues to enjoy sport today, especially senior softball. He has been playing slowpitch softball for 45 years and currently plays for and coaches the most successful senior slowpitch team in the United States, the Florida Legends. In 2009, he was inducted into the National Senior Softball Hall of Fame. Martens and his wife, Julie, live in Ormond Beach, Florida.

Pros:- lots of topics- chapters are well-categorized and information within them make sense- good for any sport (though it does have somewhat of a basketball lean)- lots of good info-graphics, tables, checklists, pictures, etc so you are not just reading listlessly- good information for all levels of coaching- the list goes on and on - this is quite possibly the best book I have bought from Amazon so farCons:- Big (over 500 pages)- Would like to see more info in the "practice as games (paraphrase)" section- Some information in the supplement breakdown is contrary to the information I am familiar with** Added Bonus **Apparently this book is also the curriculum for a college course, so whether you are just thinking about buying it and want more information, or you already own it and want a "quick reference" there is a very good support site here:[...]I have read several books on coaching, and this is by far, the most comprehensive. It is easy to read and quite informative. Covers areas including self-assessment, tactical and technical coaching, practices, psychology, communication (with players, officials, even assistant coaches!), staff management, and even record keeping!
What an amazing author. When I got done reading the book I wanted to meet him! Fabulous content. I want to be a Caoach, and I had to by this for school. There was, however a huge problem with the shipping and delivery. The book took awhile to arrive and by the time it did, it stank, if what I'm not sure? Did gasoline spill all over it? I doubt it, because it was everywhere and not on the box. My guess was that it was stored in a meth lab or some warehouse. It was so nasty. It have me a headache and I'm not super sensitive. I aired it out in the sun and fresh air over a period of 3 months, meticulously turning each page every few days, and smelling each page to ensure the smell was gone. It was disgusting. If the seller contacted me now, I would not even accept a replacement; the next would probably be the same! I gave the book 3 stars for its content only.
Even though this was written edited six years ago the material is still relevant. This is an excellent resource for beginning, as well as seasoned coaches that need a refresher. This text digs into all aspects of coaching outside the Xs and Os. It especially challenges you to think about yourself and what it means to be a coach.
Replace the word "Coaching" with anything. Relationships, Parenting, friendships, marriage. Very surprising.
A great book on coaching. I needed to read twice to determine which philosophies I wanted to adopt and pertained to individual coaching. I would recommend to anyone in coaching at any level.
This should be required reading for all coaches, sports instructors, Martial Artists and parents. A step by step manual on how to guide young folks into a happy life with sports and living in general. The writing seems to be on the 8th grade level but the ideas are all college graduate! There is an updated version of this book that has newer and more complete techniques for training. That is why this book only rates a 4 star. Ed
Ordered this book for Kindle for a college class and the code to take text is not included. Contacted amazon was told I had to spend another 29 dollars to purchase paperback to take text and finish my class. Brian at Amazon stated he would give me $15.00 toward the second purchase which I never received! DO NOT PURCHASE FOR KINDLE IF YOU NEED TO TAKE A TEST..order paperback!!
